  • IAFP FOOD HYGIENE AND SANITATION PDG AGENDA FOR NEXT VIRTUAL MEETING – DECEMBER 8, 2022 11:00AM - 12

    The Food Hygiene and Sanitation PDG Submission Status for IAFP 2023 has been posted under the latest shared files and discussion board for review. In addition, the proposed workshop, titled, "Demystifying Dry Cleaning: Understanding the When, How and Why of Dry Cleaning & Sanitizing (Disinfecting)" has been approved by the Program Committee. Special thanks to the organizers of this workshop!

    The status document includes sponsored 2023 symposia and roundtables that were submitted and acknowledged for review by the deadline of October 4th. Thanks very much again to everyone that participated in these efforts!!

    We will discuss the status of the symposia, roundtables and workshops and continue planning and scheduling webinars during the year. Workshops will be promoted in January 2023. Organizers and instructors for the dry cleaning workshop have been contacted for scheduling collaboration separate from the monthly PDG meeting.

    As a reminder, all upcoming meetings will occur on the second Thursday of each month at 11am to 12pm Eastern Time (US).     2022 Board Response to Recommendations
    1. Recommend approval of Dr. Beilei Ge as Chair and Dr. Maria Ma as Vice Chair of the APFS PDG as elected by the PDG members.

      Board Response: Agreed.

    2. Recommend scheduling future year’s PDG meetings for the APFS PDG and the Low Water Activity Foods PDG to NOT occur concurrently.

      Board Response: This will be taken into consideration when scheduling PDG meetings at IAFP 2023.

    3. Recommend making it smoother for members to join this PDG. Many were confused on how to do that. Would those with badges scanned at the meeting join the PDG automatically? There is no “join” button from the IAFP Connect community link. The website for this PDG does not provide info on how to join as for other PDGs which is to “Edit profile.”

      Board Response: IAFP staff will send a message to people who attended PDG meetings who are not members of the specific PDG to encourage them to join the PDG. Interested parties can always contact the IAFP office for assistance.

    4. Recommend reaching out and fully engaging Canadian colleagues for the IAFP 2023 meeting in Toronto.

    Summary: Welcome to the PDG for Food Fraud Prevention. John and Steve have been working with others to help define a focus for the PDG that aligned with the needs of industry and within the IAFP scope – also, that is efficient use of the limited resources of the membership. We have created a survey that we will review and a position paper that has been reviewed and refined over the last year. While the PDG-FFP, itself, has not been very active publicly, there has been a lot of activity. We look forward to a very impactful session that will create a solid strategic footing for our group activity this next year. The survey results and documents are posted on the PDG website.     We are seeking nominations for IAFP Food Packaging PDG Vice Chair. This is a great opportunity to get involved with IAFP and help drive professional development on Food Packaging topics. 

    Every two years, the PDGs rotate chair and vice chair positions. Note that only IAFP members can serve as Chair and Vice Chair and this is a four year commitment. The Vice Chair will serve two years and then rotate to the Chair position for two years.

  • Foundations of Produce Safety in Hydroponic and Aquaponic Operations – Webinar Recording

    We had a great turn out (156 attendees!) for last week’s webinar presented by Sean Fogarty, Research Specialist at the Northeast Center to Advance Food Safety (NECAFS), focused on hydroponic and aquaponic crop production systems. A special thanks to Sean for devoting his time to sharing his knowledge and valuable insights with our PDG. We received more questions than we were able to cover during the scheduled webinar time, and if you had a question that did not get answered in the queue, I encourage you to follow up with Sean directly. Also keep an eye out for a symposium that Sean and his team are putting together for the annual conference in Pittsburgh with lots more on this topic!

We are announcing a call for nominations (including self-nominations) for those who may be interested in running for the Developing Food Safety Professionals PDG Vice Chair position. If elected, the Vice Chair will begin their role as Vice Chair starting at the 2022 Annual Meeting. Vice Chair is a two-year term, followed by transitioning to Chair of the PDG for another two-year term.

Many of these operations may be covered under the FSMA Produce Safety Rule or be subject to third-party audits, raising questions among growers, Extension professionals, researchers, and consultants about produce safety hazards, risk assessment, and other considerations in these operations. In this webinar, we will introduce the diversity of hydroponic and aquaponic operations, key concepts for produce safety risk assessment, and primary considerations for FSMA Produce Safety Rule compliance. We will also solicit feedback from the audience about their experiences and questions regarding produce safety in hydroponics and aquaponics.

  • FSIS Risk Assessment Opportunity

    Hopefully you've seen Isabel Walls' posting of USDA-FSIS's intent to receive proposals focusing on Salmonella assessment in chicken and turkey chains.

    Below is a copy of Isabel's earlier posting.

    The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is requesting proposals for a cooperative agreement to collaborate on two risk assessments – one for Salmonella in chicken and another for Salmonella in turkey. These risk assessments will provide scientific support for FSIS to develop a revised framework for controlling Salmonella in poultry. FSIS will evaluate both preharvest and postharvest intervention strategies and assess the impact of reducing Salmonella levels and the prevalence of subtypes of public health concern (e.g., Typhimurium, Enteritidis, Infantis) on the rate of Salmonella illnesses from chicken and turkey consumption.

    FSIS is seeking proposals from a multi-disciplinary team to support these risk assessments. The team should include individuals who cangather and analyze existing industry data and provide it to FSIS in a confidential and secure manner, including data on Salmonella levels and subtypes in chicken and turkey, both pre- and post-harvest. The team should also have expertise in dose-response modeling that takes into consideration differences in Salmonella virulence among subtypes.  Multi-disciplinary teams may be from multiple institutions and must designate a single principal investigator from a U.S. organization. We encourage collaborations that include minority serving institutions.

    The cooperative agreement announcement has been posted on Grants.gov on March 2, 2022. Proposals must be submitted to FSIS by April 15, 2022.
